What is a Custom GPT?

A custom GPT is a feature available for Chat GPT Plus, Pro, Team, Enterprise, and Edu members that allows users to create their own instance, or version, of Chat GPT that is personalized for their own needs. For example, a teacher could make a custom GPT for her students that assists them with scheduling and homework.

Navigate to GPT Builder

  1. Start from either the https://chatgpt.com/gpts/editor page or the https://chatgpt.com/gpts page.
  2. In the upper right hand corner, click the Create button.

  3. The screen is split into two sides: GPT Builder, and Preview.

  4. GPT Builder has two options for creating a GPT: the Create tab, which uses conversational prompts, and the Configure tab, which uses text-based fields and advanced options. We will cover both methods.
Note: The Configure tab will automatically be filled out based on the prompt responses sent to the GPT Builder in the Create tab.

Creating a Custom GPT with the Create Tab

  1. To use conversational prompts to create a custom GPT, click the Create tab.
  2. You will be prompted to describe the GPT you want to create. Enter your description into the Message GPT Builder field. You can use descriptive language here, and be as specific as you like. It is a good idea to be as specific as possible about what you want the responses to look like, and what you do and do not want the GPT to answer.
  3. When finished, click the Send icon.

  4. The GPT Builder will automatically start building your GPT. Follow the remaining on screen prompts to finish setting up your custom GPT.
  5. To add a document to your GPT’s knowledge base, click the Attach icon.
[A screenshot showing the Attach icon highlighted in a red box next to the Message GPT Builder field. It looks like a paper clip.]
  6. To try out your custom GPT, enter your prompt into the Message field on the right side of the screen.
  7. To send the prompt, click the Send icon.
  8. When you are ready to share your GPT, click the Create button in the upper right hand corner.
  9. The Share GPT dialog box is displayed.

  8. The Conversation starters section will display ideas for sample prompts based on what’s entered in the Description and Instructions fields. You can delete irrelevant prompts by clicking the Delete icon next to the prompt, and add new ones using the blank text field.
